Books to help raise globally-minded children

I love inspiring my son to learn new things through pages of a book. Books that stir up curiosity and teach him about other cultures, traditions, foods and lifestyles from around the world are my personal favorites. If you're not up for a long plane ride to a far off land, you can still show your child the world through these beautiful and informative books. Here are some of my favorites for kids of all ages:

I have a million pictures of Zay and Jamie reading books because they're the sweetest moments.

WHOEVER YOU ARE

This book is a simple one that illustrates the similarities and differences of people around the world beautifully. My favorite part is that the author shows that pain and blood are the same no matter where you're from or who you are, which sounds weird out of context, but it's a beautiful and important lesson to learn.

HERE WE ARE

It's not easy explaining the universe and planet earth to little kids, but this beautifully written and illustrated book, does it. It covers everything in a simplified way, from the ocean, to animals, to the people that inhabit the earth. For how well written it is, it's a million times more visually stunning.

Ages 3-7

THIS IS HOW WE DO IT

I love this book. It walks you through a day in the lives of seven children all over the world and shows what they eat, how they get to school, what they wear, where they sleep, and so much more. It digs deeper than everyday stereotypes and illustrates our similarities and differences beautifully and concisely.

Ages 1-4

HELLO ATLAS

This book celebrates languages from all over the world. Featuring 100 languages from well-known and widely spoken languages, to lesser-known indigenous languages, this book shows children in their home town, city, or village doing ordinary things and speaking their native language.

Ages 7-12

IF THE WORLD WERE A VILLAGE

This book boils the world down to just 100 people and illustrates the breakdown of citizens on topics from food security to religion to health.

Ages 8-12

IF YOU LIVED HERE: HOUSES OF THE WORLD

This book goes through houses from all over the world, from yurts, to boat houses, to houses carved out of mountains. Teach your little one (and yourself for that matter) about different dwellings and why houses in certain regions are built the way they are.

Ages 6-9

A YEAR FULL OF STORIES

This book is a collection of myths, stories, and legends from around the world. It's broken down into 12 chapters for each month with a story for every week of the year. Some of the stories are a little gruesome, so if you have a sensitive child, maybe read the story yourself before reading them outloud to your child.
